The Dr Welch Workshop: A Makerspace at Penn College of Technology

Deliverables:

  • 1 Logo

  • 7 symbols

  • 1 Map

This semester long project involving 3 different pieces was for a redesign of the Dr. Welch Workshop. The project is meant to help the Makerspace feel easier to navigate and bring some much needed life to the currently dull colored setting.

Logo

The concept for the logo was to combine a wrench with a gear to form a power symbol. This concept was meant to highlight the hands-on experience of the Makerspace while also representing the technological opportunities the place offers.

Symbols

The makerspace has 7 different stations throughout the place including sewing, printing, spray/abrasive, laser cutting, wood working, metal working, and welding. These symbols are designed to help mark what each station is and what you might be able to find there. They are also color coded so each one is easy to point out and adds some color to a place that was mainly grey.

Map

The Makerspace also needed a map to clearly define the different stations within the space so that people could easily navigate it. The stations are labeled using the symbols I previously created and the section is marked by blocking off the area using the symbols corresponding color. The map also clearly labels each piece of equipment within the stations, by numbering them, so people could find exactly what they’re looking for.
